Luang Prabang - Ban Phouluang Tai - Luang Prabang Laos is a country where visitors can really escape from the stress of modern life and step into the tranquility of a world dominated by Buddhism. One of the highlights of Laos is the former royal capital of Luang Prabang in the northern mountains. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is little traffic on the streets and monks in saffron robes carrying black umbrellas to shade themselves are a familiar sight. The following trek options provide the opportunity to discover charming temples, friendly minority tribes and fertile valleys. The only difficulty will be choosing which route!
Day 1: Luang Prabang - Ban Phouluang Tai (H’mong village) We start by taking a local boat across the Mekong River to Ban Muang Kham. Then trek uphill to Ban Nong Nga Xay (the H’mong tribe). After a picnic lunch, we continue to Ban Phouluang Tai where we stay overnight. (L, D)
Day 2: Ban Phouluang Tai - Luang Prabang Enjoy an easy walk downhill visiting Ban Moc Palai (H’mong tribe), Ban Som (Lao Lum), Ban Houei and Tane (Khmu tribe). After lunch we continue to Ban Nakham (Lao Lum) for four hours on foot, and then take a local boat across the Mekong River to Luang Prabang. (B, L)
What to take: You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage; therefore it is in your own interest to pack as lightly as possible. We suggest a medium sized backpack for the treks with enough essentials for two nights away. Suitcases are not suitable for this trip. We also recommend strong walking shoes/boots for the trek, sandals and a pair of loose fitting comfortable long pants for the evenings. Video cameras in the minority villages are available to use one in these areas, but always asking first before making photos.
